Car Attack On ICE Agent — Suspect Vanishes

A suspect used a vehicle as a weapon against a federal immigration agent in New Jersey, and the agent fought back — but the suspect is still on the loose.

Story Snapshot

  • An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was struck by a vehicle while trying to make an arrest in Manahawkin, New Jersey, on June 15, 2026.
  • The agent opened fire at the fleeing vehicle and reportedly hit it, but the suspect escaped and has not been found.
  • A separate New Jersey incident involved a Honduran man with a criminal record who rammed a law enforcement vehicle during an ICE arrest attempt — that suspect was caught and taken into custody.
  • New Jersey’s attorney general is investigating both shooting incidents, which is standard procedure when a law enforcement officer fires a weapon.

Agent Struck During Arrest Attempt Near Jersey Shore

An ICE agent was conducting a lawful arrest near Manahawkin, New Jersey, around 9:30 a.m. on June 15, 2026, when the suspect fled in a vehicle and struck him. Stafford Township Police confirmed the agent suffered injuries and then fired at the fleeing vehicle. Police say the shots reportedly hit the vehicle. At least three yellow evidence markers — the kind used to mark spent shell casings — were visible at the scene.

The suspect drove away and has not been located. Police have not publicly confirmed whether the suspect was hit by gunfire. The extent of the agent’s injuries also remains unknown. No dashcam or surveillance video of the strike has been released to the public. Stafford Township Police stated clearly that local officers were not part of the ICE operation — the agent was working alone when the incident happened.

Second New Jersey Incident: Criminal Suspect Rammed ICE Vehicle

A separate but related incident took place in Roxbury Township, New Jersey, involving Jesus Fabian Lopez-Banegas, a Honduran national described by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a criminal illegal alien. DHS said Lopez-Banegas has a criminal history that includes drug trafficking, drug possession, and driving under the influence. He also had an active removal order against him. ICE agents were trying to arrest him when he rammed his pickup truck into a law enforcement vehicle.

DHS said Lopez-Banegas “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over.” The ICE agent responded by shooting out the tires of Lopez-Banegas’s truck to stop it. No injuries were reported in that incident. Lopez-Banegas was taken into ICE custody. ICE confirmed the agent followed proper protocol when he fired at the tires.

Attorney General Investigates; Agents Face Real Danger

Acting New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said her office is actively investigating the Roxbury shooting. “We are actively investigating an incident involving ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in which a firearm was discharged in Roxbury Township,” Davenport said. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Office helped secure the scene. New Jersey law requires an investigation any time a law enforcement officer fires a weapon.

These incidents are not isolated. ICE agents across the country have faced suspects using vehicles as weapons during arrest attempts. Federal law allows agents to use force — including deadly force — when they reasonably believe their life or the life of another person is in immediate danger. A vehicle used to strike or run over an officer meets that legal standard. The agent in Manahawkin was doing his job to enforce federal immigration law when he was hit. That is a fact that should not get lost in the debate over immigration enforcement.
