Polk County’s Large-Scale Operation
Beginning on October 2, 2024, Operation Autumn Sweep mobilized law enforcement agencies in Polk County to combat human trafficking and criminal activity. Sheriff Grady Judd spearheaded the efforts, which involved several police departments and social service organizations. 157 people were arrested during the five-day initiative for crimes ranging from prostitution to drug possession.
The operation uncovered a network that crossed state lines and included 25 illegal immigrants. Multiple suspects brought to the undercover location had their illegal drugs and firearms confiscated. “The approach of Hurricane Milton caused us to end our investigation earlier than planned, but it’s still amazing that in such a short amount of time we were able to put 157 people in jail, and three child predators. – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Echoes of Broader Concerns
The operation took place amidst Hurricane Milton’s looming threat. Despite the hurricane, the execution was well-managed, demonstrating efficient agency coordination. Individuals from a variety of states and countries, including the United Kingdom, were arrested.
Sixteen percent of the suspects we arrested are here illegally, but were offered free medical, food, travel, and housing, compliments of the U.S. taxpayers – meanwhile hurricane victims are still waiting, and praying for help.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff
The successful crackdown, highlighting gaps in immigration and distribution of government resources, calls for critical reflection on policy and enforcement practices. The legal system faces significant challenges as these incidents unfold across state lines, demanding intensified scrutiny and actions to secure the nation.
